final piece
Out of the set I took in my prep work I will pick 8 out of both halves, 4 from school; 4 from home, then have some of the photos follow in the way of Bloomberg and Chanarin (see prep page) others I’m going to cut in half and stick together to show their personality when being seen by their friends and then by society. I’m also going to change the shadowing or the vibrancy of a photo to display the mood of my subject; this will all be done in post-processing. I’m not too sure on what photos I’m going to pick from the school side of the set but I have made my mind up on what I’m using from my home side of the set.
I started with this because I wanted to show how awkward people are when they’re asked to have photos taken. I like this in particular because it is the perfect demonstration of what I have been developing through my sets, which is showing how quickly someone can change when they have a camera in their face and they know that the blur isn’t there to protect them from society seeing them as they truly are. I picked to do this for my final piece because most teenagers and people don’t really like their photo being taken at all, so showing people through a blur image that someone is actually really fun or open or loud shows how society and how they judge people without knowing who they are has changed people for the worse and this links with my topic “changed”. I done what I did in post-processing to show even in a comical look you can clearly tell that someone is uncomfortable or don’t feel natural like they’re hiding something away from everyone else.
In post-processing I took two photos, one sharp one blurred, of the same person and put them together to show two halves of a person. I did this to show the change of personality in the form of the photo being in focus, to completely out of focus. I thought of this while looking at my ideas of showing the shy, society judged side and showing the subject being themselves and came up with merging the two together to show how someone has been changed by society to the point that they almost have a split personality. I like this as it shows how over time my skills in both photography and Photoshop have developed and built up over time of the course. I could improve this by maybe using two different people or siblings to show how different every one is no matter how similar they are.
I took this photo to show how I have developed my ideas surrounding Armstrong’s work through the sets. I took his idea of using the way someone is standing of the colors around them to show their emotions and feelings; I also used the way he blurs his photos to the point of them being unrecognizable. This was a big success as it shows that you don’t need to see someone’s face perfectly to see that they’re happy or sad or annoyed. It’s successful because it also breaks that social mold of needing the best smile or the clearest face to show your happiness. In this photo I wanted to show how I have allowed others work like Armstrong and Commeau to inspire my work and in my opinion this work is my own original idea with the style of two artists. I also wanted to show how the most abstract of things or the most unrecognizable of people can still be interesting and be able to send some meaning to others. I think the main thing I wanted to show is that you don’t need to be so self conscious when you smile because people don’t really care about you’re looks but more about your happiness and if your happy with yourself and how you look then others will see you that way too.
This links to my topic “changed” as it shows that altered or disrupted photos can still have meaning and still show emotion and just because a photo is blurred it can still display someone’s personality.

I took this photo to show how differently people act when having the camera blurred so other cannot tell who they are. I developed this idea through this set because I don’t really like having my photo taken but when I see its blurred I suddenly relax knowing that strangers and my peers won’t really be able to see who I am. I showed this idea through portraits of others because I wanted to demonstrate how having that blur in the way of your face suddenly makes you comfortable. In my opinion it shows how society has changed everyone making them feel like they need to be “perfect” in the eyes of others even though it doesn’t really matter. This photo is influenced by Travis Commeau and how he uses blur to show off his short sightedness. I used blur to allow people to be themselves because its hard enough having a photo taken without a big camera and a studio light being pointed at you so having that blur relaxes the subject. I wanted to show how people change for society and how it isn’t right that they should have to hide away behind the anonymity of a blur so they aren’t judged or laughed at. If I could improve this in any way it would be the range of people I used as not everyone wants their photo taken and I can respect that as its their own decision and I cant force them to do anything. The photo itself I wouldn’t change anything it has best exposure, not over exposed not under exposed. I used a zoom lens; studio lights and a soft box to light up the entire subject not just one half. I couldn’t really post-process this as it wouldn’t change anything just how light or dark it was and how quickly the contrast was. The mood I wanted to give off to the viewer was that they should feel more confident and proud of themselves and they shouldn’t view themselves by societies “guidelines” that they set for everyone.
This links to my topic “changed” as it demonstrates how society has changed people’s confidence and self-belief. It also links to changed as it shows jut how quickly a view of something can become just because of a blur.

This project overall has been very successful as it has allowed me to develop my skills in close up photograph and portrait photography. Adding on to this, I can now look at a photo an analysis it differently; instead of looking and thinking it looks pretty, I now see how the photographer has thought about the composition and his or hers train of thought while taking the photo. Photography has helped me develop my literacy skills also making me more literate and understand ways to word sentences eloquently.
